Everyday advocacy: Engaging decisionmakers in support of graduate students

Join APAGS for this FREE virtual training presented by staff in the APA Advocacy Office geared toward graduate students who are interested in learning more about psychology advocacy opportunities at the school, local, state, and federal level(s). Panelists will share information on how to enhance your basic advocacy skills and will provide advice for those looking to engage in advocacy efforts.

APAGS-CSOGD mentoring program

Deadline: October 15, 2024

Are you looking for an LGBTQIA+ psychologist, professional, or advanced graduate student to support your professional development, or are you interested in taking an LGBTQIA+ graduate student under your wing?

The APAGS Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity’s (APAGS-CSOGD) free, yearlong mentoring program (January 2025–January 2026) for LGBTQIA+ graduate students in psychology is open for applications.

Students: Visit the mentee application page and complete it as instructed by October 15, 2024.

APA Virtual Psychology Graduate Student Fair

Event: Noon–4 p.m. (ET)

Registration for all prospective psychology graduate students is FREE. The goal of the virtual fair is to connect graduate psychology programs with a diverse group of students, including current undergraduates, graduate students seeking to further their education beyond their current degree, and individuals returning for their graduate education.

psycCareers Job Fair

November 15, 2024

APA psycCareers will host a virtual job fair for psychologists looking for employment. Text or video chat with employers looking for psychologists, get one-on-one career coaching, and participate in career management sessions.

APA Voter Engagement Guide

Psychology is on the ballot in 2024! From funding for psychological research and workforce development to suicide prevention programs, telehealth access, Medicare reimbursement, education, and much more. This election cycle, American voters will decide the next U.S. president, as well as all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 33 U.S. Senators, 11 governors, and hundreds of state and local officials. Policies that impact the scope and practice of psychology are being proposed at every level of government. Do not sit out this election season! It is more important than ever for psychologists to participate in the democratic process and educate candidates and communities about the importance of psychology to our society and everyday lives.

APA has put together a Voter Engagement Guide that focuses on voter registration, voting rights, election actions/voting plans, and sample questions for candidates.

Administration for Children and Families Grants

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) supports dissertation research by advanced doctoral students addressing policy relevant issues. The Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) has forecasted funding opportunities for fiscal year 2025 for dissertation research on key topics of interest to ACF. Visit grants.gov to see the child care dissertation grants, head start dissertation grants, and behavioral interventions scholars to view descriptions and due dates.

Division 54 Lizette Peterson-Homer Injury Prevention Grant
Deadline: October 16, 2024
Amount: $5,000

This grant, open to graduate students in accredited universities, supports work that seeks to increase the public’s understanding of the psychological pain and stigma experienced by adults living with visible physical disabilities.

Division 18 Lived Experience Fund Dissertation Research Grant
Deadline: October 16, 2024
Amount: $1,250

This research grant supports a doctoral student in clinical, counseling, or community psychology with lived experience who is doing their dissertation in a topic area related to peer support, survivor research, the c/s/x movement, disclosure of lived experience, or other projects in the general area focused on lived experience.

K. Anders Ericsson Dissertation Research Grant
Deadline: October 30, 2024
Amount: $10,000

The K. Anders Ericsson dissertation research grant supports one annual $10,000 grant for dissertation research in the general area of expertise and skill acquisition with a preferred focus on applications of the expert performance approach and/or the impacts of deliberate practice in diverse domains of skill.

Awards

APAGS Student Diversity Initiative Award
Deadline: October 16, 2024

This year, APAGS is awarding one grant for $2,500. This grant provides funding for the development of initiatives to aid in the recruitment, retention and leadership training of psychology doctoral students from diverse backgrounds. Diversity is broadly defined and includes identification by race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, ability/disability, religion, language, socioeconomic status, and age.
